Reflection
While designing my ePortfolio, I wanted to ensure that my website was not only easy for users to follow and view my work and credentials, but also was able to display some of my personality while remaining professional. I accomplished this by organizing my website in a clear way with headings and descriptions, and by using buttons that looked nice but were functional and directly opened the files they were supposed to. One way I think I made my website efficient and appealing was with my ‘works’ page that includes writings of mine that I am proud of. I displayed my writings in a way that made the page look eye appealing, with infographics from the texts and informative, small descriptions of each work. I also utilized my color scheme when trying to showcase some of my personality in my portfolio. I used colors that I personally enjoy, neutrals and pale blues and pinks, that I also believe work well together to make the website feel cohesive. Another way I worked to make the website feel more personal towards my users was in my home page. I tried to make my homepage very informative, including a small paragraph about me with my major and interests as well as a photo of myself.
When it came to displaying my resume, I chose to make it a little more creative by using canva. This way I was able to pick a template that was different from the more traditional professional resumes, and add some color to it (more blue) so it appears more appealing and personal. I did decide not to include any infographics or pictures in my resume, so it still resembled something that could be used in a professional environment. I chose to group my resume with my personal statement in the same page as I felt as if they both include information about me that is necessary when it comes to applying for serious job or internship applications. I decided to go with a personal statement rather than a cover letter because I felt more comfortable expressing my interests and expertise towards a more general field, like law, than to a specific internship or position. I find that a personal letter may be more useful to me in the future as I can reuse it for multiple occasions and not have it be committed to one role. I utilized my personal statement as an outlet to explain my passion for writing and reading, briefly explain my work experience, and discuss my plans for my future.
Overall, I believe I constructed my ePortfolio in a way that expresses who I am as a person, while showing my credentials as a student and a writer. One of my main goals when creating my website was to ensure that it was appealing and colorful, without looking too busy to be considered ‘professional’. I believe I accomplished this goal with my simplicity when designing the site, and by just trying to design a portfolio that I would like.
